FAQ
Sump & Well Pumps: common questions
How often should I test a sump pump?
Every three months, and always before your wet season. Pour a bucket of water into the pit and confirm the pump starts, discharges and stops. That two-minute test is the difference between finding out now and finding out during a storm.
Do I need a battery backup?
If a flooded basement would cause real damage, yes. The heavy storm that overwhelms your drainage is the same event that knocks out power, so a mains-only pump is offline exactly when it is needed. This is the most common single point of failure with sump pumps.
How long does a well pump last?
Submersible pumps typically run 8 to 15 years. Frequent short-cycling — usually caused by a waterlogged pressure tank rather than the pump — dramatically shortens that, which is why the tank should be checked before a pump is condemned.
Why does my pump run constantly?
Usually a stuck float, a failed check valve letting discharged water flow back into the pit, or genuinely high groundwater. The first two are inexpensive repairs; the third is a drainage question worth answering before the pump burns out.
