Pricing guide
Plumbers set their own prices. Here is how to get a fair one.
Pro US Plumbers does not set, quote or guarantee prices. Each independent plumber quotes their own, and the same symptom can be a small repair or a major job, so no honest site can give you a number in advance.
How plumbers charge
Flat rate versus hourly
Most plumbers quote one of two ways. Neither is better in every case, but knowing which one you are being offered tells you what to ask.
| What is being compared | Flat-rate quote | Hourly billing |
|---|---|---|
| When you learn the price | Before work starts, in writing | Often only when the job is done |
| If the job runs long | Usually unchanged, unless the scope changes | The bill grows with the time taken |
| Works best for | Well-defined jobs: a water heater swap, a fixture install | Open-ended diagnosis where the cause is unknown |
| What to ask | What exactly is excluded, and how extras are approved | The hourly rate, minimum charge and whether travel time is billed |

What a written quote should say
A verbal number is easy to misremember and impossible to hold anyone to. Before you agree to a job, ask the plumber for a quote that covers these points, and compare more than one if the job is large.
- The plumber's name, business name and licence number
- A description of the work, not just a total
- Parts, labour and disposal, itemised or clearly included
- Whether permits and inspections are included
- A start date and an estimated finish
- The workmanship warranty, in writing: what it covers and for how long
- How extra work is priced and approved before it is done
- Payment terms, including any deposit and when the balance is due

Questions about cost
Why can't you tell me what it will cost?
Because Pro US Plumbers does not set prices, and because the same symptom can be a small repair or a major job depending on the cause. Any site quoting a single number for it is advertising rather than pricing. The plumbers who contact you will quote their own price once they know what is wrong.
What is a diagnostic or call-out fee?
A charge some plumbers make for visiting and finding the cause. Some credit it against the repair if you go ahead, some do not. Ask whether it applies, how much it is, and whether it is credited before you agree to a visit.
Do plumbers charge more at night or on weekends?
Many do. After-hours and emergency call-out fees are common, and they differ a lot between contractors. Ask for the fee and the likely total before you agree to send anyone out.
Should I pay a deposit?
A modest deposit for materials on a larger job is common. Be wary of anyone who wants most of the money up front, or cash only, before any work is done. Rules on deposits vary by state, and a written agreement protects you.
What if the job turns out to cost more than quoted?
Agree in writing, before work starts, how extra work will be priced and approved. If new scope appears once a wall is open, a reasonable plumber explains it and gets your agreement before carrying on, rather than adding it to an invoice you have not seen.
Is financing available?
Some contractors offer financing for larger work such as repipes, sewer replacements and water heater installations. Pro US Plumbers does not provide financing, so ask the plumber and compare the terms with paying outright.
Something leaking, blocked or not heating?
Send one request describing the problem. Independent local plumbers can contact you directly with their availability and price, and you choose whether to hire any of them.
